Over the past weeks you may have noticed moving vans outside the Glassell School of Art. Last week the MFAH completed moving the school to its temporary home near the Texas Medical Center. Next, the parking lot attached to the school will be closed, and the MFAH will begin installing construction fencing in preparation for the demolition of the school and the excavation of the site for the new Glassell School of Art and underground parking garage.
The MFAH estimates the demolition and excavation work will last approximately 6 months. During this time the MFAH will be periodically closing one lane of traffic on the east side of Montrose Boulevard alongside the construction site. Construction vehicles will be exiting the site onto Montrose from Barkdull Street. Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
What this means in terms of parking availability: effective 5 p.m., Friday, August 14, the parking lot adjacent to the current Glassell School building will be closed. As of 7 a.m., Monday, August 17, the parking lot behind the Museum of Fine Arts Administration Building at 5100 Montrose will no longer be available, except to Museum staff and volunteers 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The MFAH reiterates how much it regrets the inconvenience to its neighbors that the construction will bring. It is committed to reducing the impact on daily life and movement as much as possible, and the MFAH encourages you to contact the office of Willard Holmes, Chief Operating Officer (713- 830-5280 or expansion@mfah.org), with any concerns.
